Dottore Luigi Amadio passed away.
On Sunday 12 March Doctor Luigi Amadio, General Director of Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome, Italy passed away. He was born on 4th June 1947. And to all who knew him in our wheelchair basketball world he was the epitome of a ' larger than life ' figure in every respect - personality, physically and professionally. He loved life and wanted those around him to feel the same love. He had an infectious laugh even when things seemed bleak - he was a joy to be around and we will all miss him so very much.
Luigi Amadio was the first Secretary / Treasurer of IWBF Europe. He served in that position for two terms from 1991 until 1999. He was not only the Secretary / Treasurer but hosted all our autumn meetings of the IWBF Europe Board in those days. The highlight of every meeting was the Saturday evening diner in his home hosted by his wonderful mother who outlives him albeit in poor health. We send to her and his whole family our sincere condolences.
He was ambitious for our sport and arranged many clinics for referees and trainer/coaches at the hospital Santa Lucia in spite of his own not inconsiderable professional work load.
As Doctor Amadio he rebuilt the "old" Santa Lucia hospital in a completely new, modern and very comfortable way, an example replicated as a model elsewhere in Italy. His big innovation for a rehab hospital was the inclusion of sports facilities and of course a very nice basketball court.
Luigi was also President of the three times European Champion Wheelchair Basketball team S.Lucia - a championship regarded as one of the toughest in the world. He understood just like his father before, who was a great admirer and friend of the famous Sir Ludwig Gutmann, the magical power of sport and rehabilitation.
We will remember him as our Luigi - a great wheelchair basketball fan, the most generous of hosts but most of but most of all above all else our dear, dear friend.
On behalf of IWBF Europe, Hans Tukker (former President)
